Men's Lacrosse Rolls Past Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Drew University men's lacrosse team fired off a whopping 64 shots en route to a convincing 19-9 victory at Immaculata in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening.

The Rangers (5-1) continued their best start since 2012 and won going away, breaking it open with a late 8-0 run.

Junior Craig Wilkie turned in another big offensive performance for Drew, which picked up its first road victory of the season. He racked up five goals and three assists, including two goals and two helpers during the team's decisive run. Entering the night ranked seventh in Division III in goals per game (5.00), his last goal gave him 30 just six games into the season.

Freshman Mike DeMayo added four goals and one assist while going over 20 goals in his young career, and classmate Charlie Collins registered three goals and two helpers. Sophomores Brett Spafford and David Burke chipped in with two goals each, while Burke also had a big game defensively with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore GJ Nazziola went 16-for-27 on face-offs to go with six ground balls while senior Jeremy Gottlieb collected 15 saves.

Bailey Manion led the Mighty Macs (1-3) with four goals and four assists while Cole Metzger made 24 saves.

Immaculata scored the game's first goal two and a half minutes into the contest, but it would turn out to be the hosts' only lead of the night, as the Rangers responded with a 5-0 run in which five different players found the back of the net. The teams then traded goals and Drew led 6-2 after one quarter of play. The Rangers also outscored the Mighty Macs 4-2 in the second period to assume a 10-4 halftime advantage.

Spafford scored the first goal of the second half to make it a seven-goal game, only to see Immaculata reel off a 4-0 run to close to within 11-8 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. However, Wilkie netted his third goal of the game with 1:03 left in the period, kicking off Drew's game-changing run.

In the fourth quarter, six different Rangers accounted for their seven goals, with DeMayo striking twice during the big rally.

Drew finished with 30 more shots (64-34) than Immaculata and committed just nine turnovers. The tightly-officiated affair featured a total of 17 penalties.

The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they visit Manhattanville at 1 p.m.
