Manhattanville Tops Women's Volleyball

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team came up on the short end of a 3-0 decision to Manhattanville College in a non-conference match Saturday morning in Baldwin Gym.

The Valiants (4-1) won by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-20.

Sophomore Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro and junior Melina Christodoulou led the Rangers (3-3) with six kills apiece while sophomore setter Ashley Butler posted four kills and 18 assists. Sophomore Ashley Carkhuff added four kills and 13 digs, sophomore Lauren Gaza scooped 12 digs, and freshman Marissa Guajardo fired three aces.

Ayla Ruiz paced Manhattanville with 10 kills and 11 digs.

The visitors never trailed in the opening set after racing out to a 7-1 lead. The Rangers trimmed the deficit to two on three occasions before the Valiants pulled away late.

The second set was tight early on and featured nine ties, with the last occurring at 13-13. But that's when Manhattanville used a 5-1 spurt to open a gap.

The final set was even closer, with 12 ties and eight lead changes. The Valiants led just 20-18 before a 3-0 burst broke it open.

The Rangers pick up their schedule on Tuesday, when they visit Mount Saint Vincent at 7 p.m. in another non-conference tilt.
