RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Drew University women's volleyball team spoiled the season opener for the College of Mount Saint Vincent, as the Rangers collected a 3-0 road sweep over the Dolphins on Tuesday.
Drew (4-3) won by scores of 25-18, 25-12, and 25-23.
Freshman
Teeya Desgoutte recorded a season-high 12 kills with junior
Melina Christodoulou recording eight. Sophomore
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro and junior
Leila Ksiyer each finished with seven kills. Sophomore
Jasmine Butler dished out a match-high 23 assists to go along with six digs and three aces, while sophomore
Lauren Gaza had nine digs.
Melanieann Broderick led the Dolphins with 12 kills and Brianna Ayuso finished with 12 assists and 10 digs.
The Rangers trailed 2-1 early in the first set, but used a pair of 6-0 runs to gain control. Camacho-Tenreiro capped the opening win with a kill on the final point.
In the middle frame, Drew never trailed and pulled away thanks to an 8-0 with Gaza serving for seven of those points. The biggest lead for the Rangers came at 23-8, while a Camacho-Tenreiro kill and a service error closed out the victory.
In the final set, the score remained close early with Gaza serving the Rangers with a 16-10 lead. The Rangers extended that advantage to 22-12, but Mount Saint Vincent stormed back with a 10-2 burst to close the gap to a point (24-23). Desgoutte secured the sweep for the visitors, recording a kill for the night's final point.
The Rangers remain on the road on Thursday, heading to Stockton University for a 7:00 p.m. start.
