MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team enjoyed a perfect day on Saturday in Baldwin Gym, sweeping both of its opponents 3-0 in a non-conference tri-match.
The Rangers opened the day by defeating Saint Elizabeth University 25-9, 25-2, 25-15 before knocking off Kean University 25-17, 25-12, 25-11.
With the wins, Drew improved to 6-4 on the season.
The Rangers had a big day from a serving standpoint, posting a season-high 16 aces in both matches.
Versus Saint Elizabeth (0-6), junior
Leila Ksiyer led the charge with a school-record seven aces while sophomore
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro added 12 kills. Freshman
Marissa Guajardo posted seven kills and two aces while junior
Melina Christodoulou registered six kills, three blocks, and two aces. Sophomore
Jasmine Butler contributed 24 assists and three blocks, and classmate
Lauren Gaza chipped in with seven digs and two aces.
The Rangers never looked back after jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the opener. The Blue and Green started hot again in the second set, scoring 19 consecutive points with Ksiyer serving. She served up all seven of her aces during the stretch.
Drew entered several reserves into the match in the third set, when the Eagles led 9-4 early. But the Rangers rallied with a 14-3 run to take control.
Against Kean (5-4), sophomore
Ashley Carkhuff turned in a tremendous showing, firing up 12 kills on 20 attempts without making an error, good for a school-record .600 hitting percentage. For good measure, she also added eight digs, three aces, and two blocks.
Ksiyer posted nine kills and seven digs versus the Cougars while Christodoulou notched eight kills and just one error on 15 attempts for a .467 hitting performance. Guajardo served up five aces while Butler distributed 28 assists. Gaza pumped out 14 digs.
The opening set was a close affair in the early going and featured four ties and three lead changes. But midway through the period, the Rangers caught fire and went on a 7-1 run to break it open, assuming a 15-9 lead. Kean was unable to get closer than three the rest of the way.
Drew started hot in each of the last two sets. In the second stanza, the Rangers opened on an 11-3 run and carried a comfortable lead the rest of the way. They closed the set on a 7-1 surge.
The hosts were also in control all the way in the third set in which they started on a 10-2 run. The lead would swell to 16-4 and the visitors were unable to reduce the deficit under 10 down the stretch.
The Rangers return home on Thursday, when they host William Paterson University at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
