FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – For the second time in nine days, the Drew University men's golf team tied the school record for the lowest 18-hole score, firing a 291 on the second and final day of the George Cangero Invitational, hosted by Farmingdale State College on Sunday at Bethpage State Park.
For the tournament, the Rangers finished with a 590 to finish fifth out of 10 teams while beating out Stevens (591), SUNY Delhi (606), Arcadia (608), Nichols (613), and Cabrini (621). Division II St. Thomas Aquinas won with a 566.
Five of Drew's six competitors were freshmen, and the team's top three finishers were first-years.
Leading the way was
Elliot Parker, who turned in a stellar showing in his first collegiate event. After opening with a 71, he carded a 73 on Sunday to finish with a 4-over-par 144 - good for a 10th-place finish in the field of 60. It was just two strokes shy of the school record shared by three current Rangers and most recently accomplished by classmate
Bryce Garnier in the team's season opener last week.
Garnier and fellow rookie
Matt Ingram were next on the scorecard for the Rangers, with each posting a 147. After opening with a 76, Garnier came back with a 71 while Ingram also improved in the second round, shooting 75-72.
Rounding out the team scoring for Drew was senior
Lucas Artigliere, who tied for 33rd with a 152 (77-75). Freshman
Daniel Holden also competed and tied for 50th with a 158 (82-76) while classmate
Ryan Ricci golfed as an individual and tied for 46th with a 157 (76-81).
Shane Lawler of Franklin & Marshall College captured medalist honors with a 136 (67-69).
The Rangers are back in action on Monday, when Drew's "B" team competes at the FDU-Florham Invitational at the Mendham Golf and Tennis Club in Mendham, N.J.
