TOWSON, Md. – Junior defender
Jessie Brannick rebounded in her own shot in the 90th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team captured its Landmark Conference (LC) opener with a 1-0 victory at Goucher College on Saturday.
The Rangers (6-2, 1-0 LC) are now off to their best start through eight games since opening 7-1 in 2013.
Drew outshot the Gophers 22-2 but appeared to be heading for a tie before earning a corner kick with just under a minute left. Senior
Sam Kievit delivered a low ball into the box, where Brannick ripped a shot from the right side that glanced off a defender and right back to her. She followed up with a blast that ricocheted off a defender and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and her first career game-winner.
The Rangers dominated possession throughout the match and held a 22-2 advantage in shots, but Goucher goalie Marissa Spacht collected 10 saves. The Blue and Green yielded just one shot on goal.
In the opening half, the Rangers outshot the Gophers 10-0, but only two of their shots were on goal. However, Drew turned up the heat in the second half, when eight of its 12 shots were on frame.
Sophomore
Alexa Krause led the Rangers with five shots on the day, including three that were on goal.
Senior
Anthi Panayides started between the pipes for the Rangers and did not face a shot on goal while playing the opening half. Sophomore
Amina Cirkiel came on in the second half and stopped one shot to pick up the win.
Drew returns to action on Tuesday, when it hosts cross-town rival FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. in a non-conference.
