MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to visiting FDU-Florham on Tuesday with the Devils netting the lone goal of the contest in the second half.
Drew (6-3) returns to Landmark Conference play on Saturday, hosting Catholic at 4:00 p.m.
FDU-Florham remained undefeated on the season at 11-0 and recorded its fourth-straight shutout.
The teams played through a scoreless opening half, but each team had a couple of chances. The Rangers had a flurry of three penalty corners with just over 15 minutes on the clock, with FDU-Florham goalie Erica Blackburn snaring a header by Drew's
Ayla Lopez on the final bid.
Devil defender Sofia Carrozza made a huge stop along the goal line with 3:41 left before the half, denying
Sarah Passey of a goal. On the ensuing scramble,
Alexa Krause fired a shot on goal from the right side that Blackburn dove to stop.
The visitors had two chances in the final minute with Mia Lopez directing both shots on goal that Ranger goalie
Anthi Panayides corralled.
In the second half, FDU-Florham converted on the corner kick, as Carly Santucci headed in an offering from Francesca Escudero with 33:17 showing on the clock.
The hosts had several chances to pull even, with a nice passing sequence from
Rebecca Racine to
Isabella Grof-Tisza to Krause creating one of them, with Blackburn making a stop on Krause's bid. Moments later, Krause gained a step on a defender, but her shot rolled just wide of the left post.
Drew appeared to knot the score with 21:35 left in the contest with
Ayla Lopez directing a shot into the net, however, the goal was negated by an offsides call.
Panayides noted four saves in the first half for the Rangers, while
Amina Cirkiel registered three stops in the final frame. Blackburn had six saves for the Devils.
The Rangers held a 14-10 edge in shots and each team took four corner kicks.
