Kiernan’s Early Goals Lift Undefeated Rangers Over DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Sophomore Kevin Kiernan scored twice over a 1:36 span in the first half and the Drew University men's soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a 2-0 victory over host DeSales University on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Tino Puentes added one goal and one assist for the Rangers (9-0-1), ranked 22nd nationally by D3soccer.com and fifth in the region by the United Soccer Coaches. Senior Calum Erlernorn made seven saves for Drew, which has tied the second-best start in team history through 10 games.

Kiernan put the Rangers on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute. Junior Matthew Agudelo started the play, sending a pass into the left corner where senior defender Garrett Mironenko had room to operate. He centered the pass to Kiernan, who quickly redirected it inside the right post to make it a 1-0 game.

Less than two minutes later, Drew was awarded a corner kick on the right side. Agudelo sent a ball into the box, where it deflected off a defender. Puentes was there to head the ball to Kiernan, who then sent in a header of his own to give the Rangers a commanding 2-0 advantage.

It remained a two-goal game until the 73rd minute. Following a restart, Puentes weaved his way through several defenders before executing a give-and-go with Kiernan, giving team an insurmountable three-goal lead.

The Bulldogs (5-3-1) broke up Drew's shutout bid in the 89th minute on a goal from Liam MacDonald.

The Rangers outshot DeSales 18-14 for the match, with each team taking eight shots on goal. Nathan Hatzfeld made four saves for the hosts.

Drew returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Catholic University at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's Landmark Conference championship game.
