Kiernan Scores Twice as Men's Soccer Captures Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore Kevin Kiernan scored a pair of goals, senior goalie Calum Erlenborn made a tremendous stop on a penalty kick, and the Drew University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over SUNY New Paltz in its home opener on the first day of the Drew/FDU Fall Festival Saturday evening in Ranger Stadium.

Drew won its second match in a row to start the season and can clinch the festival title with a victory over Saint Elizabeth on Sunday. Saint Elizabeth and FDU-Florham tied 1-1 in Saturday's other game, which was played at FDU.

Kiernan put the Rangers on the scoreboard in the 13th minute. Junior Federico Vazquez started the play, lofting a ball from beyond midfield. Kiernan took it on one bounce and, with his momentum taking him the opposite direction at the top of the box, chipped a perfectly-placed shot over the keeper and just inside the right post.

Drew outshot the Hawks 11-4 in the opening half and carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The match may have hinged on a key pair of plays early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, New Paltz received a penalty kick, but that's when Erlenborn turned in his highlight-reel stop. Erlenborn dove to the left and the shot went to the right; however, he knocked it down with his left foot as he fell to the turf, preserving the team's lead.

Just a minute later, junior Matthew Agudelo delivered a well-placed cross to the left post, where Kiernan headed it home to hand the Rangers a 2-0 advantage.

The Hawks threatened late, scoring in the 87th minute, but missed high on their final shot of the evening in the 89th minute.

Erlenborn finished the night with four saves while Christian Micheli stopped four shots for New Paltz.

The Rangers and Saint Elizabeth kick off their match at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
