Men’s Soccer Captures Drew Fall Festival Title

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team netted three goals in the opening half, guiding the Rangers to a 3-0 victory over Saint Elizabeth on Sunday in the title game of the Drew/FDU Fall Festival. This marked the first time since the 2017 season the Rangers claimed the championship.

The Rangers (3-0) travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.

Drew claimed the early lead against the Eagles, getting on the scoreboard with 11:24 expired. Kevin Kiernan took a pass from Christian Tyson, and took a dribble to his right to create shooting space before putting a shot inside the far post.

The Rangers nearly doubled the lead in the 32nd minute when Jonathan Gutierrez headed a shot on goal that was knocked away by an Eagle defender. The margin did increase to two goals moments later, as James Cahill buried a shot from the right side after receiving a cross from Tino Puentes. In the 39th minute, Cahill struck again, this time heading in a corner kick from Gabe Di Pierro for a 3-0 cushion with 7:32 left before half.

In the second frame, the hosts controlled play, taking all 10 of the 12 shots with the best opportunities coming in the final 10 minutes. Each time Eagle goalie Justin Couto made key saves, first denying Nick Klein when he slipped behind the defense for a shot and then Mike Anello's follow-up bid from the left side of the penalty area to keep the final score at 3-0.

Cahill was tabbed the tournament's Defensive MVP while Kiernan was named Offensive MVP after scoring three times over the two days.

In goal for the Rangers, Calum Erlenborn and David Hoyt shared the shutout, as they each recorded one save in 45 minutes of action.
