MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team registered a strong performance in its home opener, sweeping non-conference foe Farmingdale State 3-0 in front of a spirited crowd in Baldwin Gym Thursday evening.
The Rangers (3-2) rallied from a late deficit to win the opening set 25-20, then closed out the night with 25-18 and 25-17 victories.
Sophomore
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro paced Drew with 10 kills - including six in the opening set - along with nine digs and three service aces. Junior
Melina Christodoulou registered seven kills and three blocks while sophomore
Jasmine Butler handed out 26 assists. Sophomore
Lauren Gaza contributed 19 digs and three aces, and freshman
Marissa Guajardo also served up three aces.
Drew trailed 19-16 in the first set but closed it on a 9-1 run. Junior
Leila Ksiyer sparked the rally with back-to-back kills before Camacho-Tenreiro followed up with consecutive aces to put the Rangers up 20-19. A Drew service error tied it at 20-all before the Blue and Green closed out the match on a 4-0 spurt, which included a pair of Guajardo aces and a kill from Christodoulou.
The Rangers trailed only twice in the second set. Leading just 17-13, they broke it open with a 5-0 run that included kills from sophomore
Ashley Carkhuff, Camacho-Tenreiro, and Guajardo.
Drew took control early in the final set, jetting out to a 12-5 lead. The Rams rallied to cut the deficit to two (17-15) before the hosts ended the match on an 8-2 burst.
The Rangers return home on Saturday, when they take on Manhattanville at 9 a.m. in another non-conference match.
