MADISON, N.J. - Senior
Rebecca Racine scored in the fourth minute and the Drew University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Moravian University in a battle between two of the top teams in the Landmark Conference Tuesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (9-5, 4-1 LC) maintained their hold on second place in the Landmark Conference standings with their victory over the Greyhounds (5-3-4, 2-1-2 LC), who entered the night just one point behind Drew.
The Rangers became the first team in Landmark Conference play to score against Moravian, which had not yielded a goal in their first four conference matchups.
Freshman
Sarah Crowley made five saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
In an evenly-played match, both sides took 10 shots, with Drew holding a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
Junior
Kat Kugler set up Racine's goal when she controlled a deflected pass at the top of the box. She tapped a pass forward to Racine, who chipped it up off the keeper's fingertips and into the upper-left corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner.
Crowley kept the Greyhounds off the scoreboard with an impressive save in the 33rd minute. A free kick sent the ball inside, and Crowley kicked it away before smothering it on the right post.
The Rangers held a 6-3 shot advantage in the opening half, when Crowley and Moravian's Paige Korpics turned aside two shots apiece.
Crowley turned in another big stop early in the second half, knocking down a short rip from the left side.
The Rangers nearly struck again in the 59th minute, when senior
Emma Shatel launched a free kick from near midfield that nearly found the upper-left corner but was knocked away by leaping Moravian goalie Paige Harrison.
The Greyhounds finished with a 7-4 shot advantage and threatened numerous times down the stretch. But Crowley helped seal the win with a stop on a low liner in the 87th minute.
Drew is back in Landmark Conference action on Saturday, when it hosts Goucher College at 4:30 p.m. during Ranger Weekend.
