MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style, posting its season-high goal total in a 6-2 Landmark Conference victory over Goucher College in a rain-soaked Ranger Stadium.
Five different players scored a goal for the Rangers (8-4-2, 4-2 LC), who have now tallied five or more goals in three of their last six matches. Drew's six goals marked the team's highest offensive output in a Landmark Conference match since a 7-0 victory at Juniata College on Oct. 20, 2018.
Drew's five seniors –
Matt Agudelo,
Michael Steinberg,
Christian Tyson,
Federico Vazquez, and
Tyler Watson – were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the match.
Agudelo finished with a career-high five points on two goals and one assist for the Rangers while junior
Kevin Kiernan contributed one goal and one assist. Junior
Tino Puentes, sophomore
Jared Brown, and freshman
Ignacio Martinez added one tally each for Drew while sophomore
Brandon Jachera made a pair of saves.
Kiernan put the Rangers in front in the 15th minute, when he chested a pass from sophomore
Jonathan Gutierrez and booted it inside the right post from the top of the box to make it a 1-0 game with his seventh goal of the year.
Puentes doubled Drew's lead when he converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute for his second tally of the season. Then with just 20 seconds left in the half, sophomore
James Cahill sent a cross from the left that Kiernan tipped to Brown, who one-timed it in from the right side to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at the intermission.
The Gophers (7-4-2, 2-3-1 LC) broke up the shutout in the 72nd minute, getting a goal from Gus Dalzell. But Drew was quick to answer, as freshman
Kevin Martinez fought for possession on the left sideline before delivering a cross to Agudelo in the box. Agudelo took one touch and chipped in a shot between two defenders and the goalie to push his team's lead to 4-1.
Drew settled any doubt in the 85th minute, when Steinberg blasted a shot off the post Agudelo was there to tap it into a wide-open net for his second career multi-goal game and his third tally of the year.
Goucher answered less than a minute later before the Rangers set the final score in the 89th minute, when Agudelo pass the ball perfectly on a free kick to a sliding
Ignacio Martinez on the right post, who drilled in his first collegiate goal.
The Rangers finished with a 19-7 shot advantage.
