SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman
Nate Keller scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute and the Drew University men's soccer team clinched the No. 4 seed and a home playoff game in the upcoming Landmark Conference Championships with a 1-0 victory at Susquehanna University in the team's regular-season finale Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (9-6-2, 5-4 LC) will now host No. 5-seeded Moravian University (6-6-5, 4-4-1 LC) in the first round on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Keller has now scored two goals on the season, and both have been game-winners in a 1-0 match. He tallied his first collegiate goal in Drew's Landmark Conference opener versus Juniata back on Sept. 24.
Junior
Kevin Kiernan set up Keller's goal with a fantastic run. The play started when senior
Christian Tyson stepped in front of a pass in the middle third and set a long pass forward to Kiernan down the left side of the field. He dribbled to the top of the box and cut inside before losing three defenders with some tremendous footwork. He then found Keller wide open on the right side, and the first-year one-timed it into the net for all the offense the Rangers would need.
It was the Landmark Conference-leading 10th helper of the season for Kiernan, who became the first Ranger in five years to reach double figures in assists. He has also scored eight goals and leads the team with 26 points.
The Rangers finished with a decided 30-7 advantage in shots, but Gerrit Stech registered nine saves for the River Hawks (3-10-3, 1-7-1 LC).
Sophomore
Brandon Jachera stopped five shots to earn his second clean sheet of the season for Drew.
The Rangers outshot Susquehanna 9-3 in the first half, when Stech made three of his saves and Jachera turned aside one shot.
The Blue and Green turned up the pressure in the second half, peppering Stech with 21 shots before cashing in on their next-to-last attempt of the game. Stech finished with six saves in the period.
Meanwhile, the River Hawks placed four shots on frame in the second stanza, but Jachera was up to task, stopping all four when the match was still tied.
The Rangers will be making their 12th appearance in the Landmark Conference Championships since the formation of the league in 2007. They will be facing Moravian for the first time in the LC tournament.
