DeMayo Scores 100th Point, But Susquehanna Downs Men's Lax in Landmark Opener

MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore Mike DeMayo scored his 100th career point, but Susquehanna University pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Drew University men's lacrosse team a 17-7 setback in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (5-5, 0-1 LC) trailed just 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter before the River Hawks (6-4, 1-0 LC) closed the game on a 7-0 run.

Sophomore Luke Bruther posted two goals and one assist for Drew while junior Matt Giordano notched one goal and two assists. Senior Jack Tynan contributed defensively with six ground balls and four caused turnovers, as did junior Tyler McCarthy with three GBs and three CTs. Freshman Matt Duarte collected 14 saves in goal.

Brennan Lorence scored eight goals to lead Susquehanna while Ryan Prum won 19-of-28 faceoffs. Jozef Korpics turned aside 11 shots for the River Hawks.

Freshman Jake Cornelius put the Rangers on the scoreboard when he tied the game at 1-1 with 6:38 left in the first quarter before Giordano pulled Drew even with 1:49 on the clock. DeMayo then potted his milestone goal 35 seconds later, but Susquehanna scored with 44 ticks showing and it was a 3-3 game at the end of the first quarter.

The River Hawks scored three consecutive goals to open the second quarter to assume a 6-3 lead, but junior Brett Spafford broke the run when he cashed in with 4:36 remaining in the half. Lorence scored his second goal of the game with 4:29 on the clock and the visitors led 7-4 at the half.

Susquehanna pushed its lead to five (9-4) after scoring the first two goals of the third quarter. But that's when the Rangers answered with a 3-1 run. Bruther scored with 5:23 left before Giordano and senior Craig Wilkie netted back-to-back tallies to make it a 10-7 game before Susquehanna's big final stanza.

The Rangers are back in action next Saturday, when they host Moravian University at 1 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
