BRONX, N.Y. - Sophomore
Huriel Perez handed out his 1,000th career assist and the Drew University men's volleyball split a pair of matches at Lehman College on Saturday.
The Rangers (8-16) opened the day with a 3-0 victory over Lehman, winning 25-13, 25-10, 25-16, before falling in four sets to Eastern University (23-25, 28-26, 25-20, 25-20).
Perez reached his milestone during the Eastern match, becoming the first men's volleyball player at Drew to achieve the mark. The Rangers are competing in their second year as a varsity program.
Perez would also dish out a school-record 44 assists versus Eastern while sophomore
Jacob Sledz set an additional Drew record with 23 kills in the same match.
Against Lehman, the Rangers broke open the first set with an 11-3 run that made it 15-7. The second set was close in the opening moments, when the Lightning led 4-3, before Drew ended the game on a 22-6 run. Then in the final set, the Rangers led just 13-11 before pulling away with an 8-0 surge.
Sophomore
Ephraim Smith led Drew with 11 kills while Perez distributed 22 assists. Sophomore
C.J. Addeo contributed four blocks.
Drew trailed 15-10 in the opening set against Eastern but rallied to take the lead with a 7-1 run. The Rangers pushed their lead to 24-20, only to see the Eagles rally with a 3-0 run. However, Sledz quelled the rally with a set-clinching kill.
The Eagles led for most of the second set and held a 23-19 advantage before Drew ran off a 5-1 run to pull even at 24-24. The match was tied two more times before Eastern ended the set by winning the last two points.
The third set was extremely close throughout, and a kill from Sledz put the Rangers up 19-17. However, that's when the Eagles went on an 8-1 run to end the match.
Eastern established a lead early on in the fourth set, outscoring Drew 16-10 to start. The Rangers used a 4-0 spurt to draw within two (16-14), but that's as close as they would get.
In addition to his 23 kills, Sledz also scooped seven digs. Smith posted his fourth double-double of the season with 19 kills and 11 digs, and Perez notched eight digs to go with his 44 assists. Sophomore
Bryan Do added 11 digs.
The Rangers are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Old Westbury at 7 p.m. on Senior Night.
