Sledz Fires Up 20 Kills in Five-Set Loss at Saint Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Sophomore Jacob Sledz tied his own school record with 20 kills, but Saint Elizabeth University rallied from a 2-1 deficit to hand the Drew University men's volleyball team a 3-2 setback Tuesday evening.

The Eagles won the opening set 27-25 before Drew came back to claim the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-20. But the hosts came back to win 25-16 in the fourth set and 15-9 in the clincher.

Sledz tied the record that he shares with teammate Omarf-Ortega-Reyes. He also scooped 11 digs for his first double-double of the season.

Sophomore Ephraim Smith added his third double-double of the year with 11 kills and 11 digs for Drew, which defeated Saint Elizabeth 3-0 when the two sides met back on Feb. 16 in Madison.

Classmate Huriel Perez distributed 39 assists, freshman Jason Barbosa served up three aces, and sophomore CJ Addeo knocked down five blocks. Sophomore Bryan Do and freshman Tynoah Ehia registered 19 and 10 digs, respectively.

Kodi Peters led Saint Elizabeth (6-5) with 21 kills.

The Rangers trailed 18-16 in the second set before rallying with a 6-0 run. Freshman Barend Oostdam served on the last five points and Drew led by at least three the rest of the way.

The Eagles led 21-20 in the third set, but the Rangers ended the scored the last four points to assume a 2-1 lead. Sledz started the spurt with a kill before teaming up with Addeo for a block. Addeo then finished off the set with back-to-back kills.

Saint Elizabeth broke open the fourth set with a late 5-0 run that made it 20-11. The Eagles outscored the Rangers 5-0 to start the final set, but Drew twice narrowed the gap to three, first at 9-6 on blocks from Addeo and Perez, then at 10-7 on a service error. But the hosts pulled away by scoring the next four points.

The Rangers are back in action on March 15, when they visit Neumann University at 7 p.m.
