Men’s Lacrosse Stopped by Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Mike DeMayo and freshman Ian Curley combined for six goals and three assists but the Drew University men's lacrosse team was handed a 24-8 setback by host Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

DeMayo posted three goals and two assists while Curley notched three goals and one helper for the Rangers, who were facing a team that was tied for the Landmark Conference lead for the second game in a row.

Drew jumped to an early 2-1 lead with 11:35 left in the opening quarter following goals from Curley and DeMayo. However, the Blue Jays (10-4, 6-0 LC) ran off a 6-0 run over the rest of the quarter to assume a 7-2 lead after one period of play.

DeMayo assisted sophomore Luke Bruther on a goal with 12:48 on the clock to make it a 7-3 game. However, that's when Etown broke it open with an 8-0 run over the rest of the half and carried a 15-3 lead into the locker room.

DeMayo scored the first and last goals of the third quarter, but the Blue Jays put together a 6-0 run in between the two tallies.

The Rangers took advantage of five man-up opportunities in the final quarter, scoring on three of them. Curley converted twice while junior Brett Spafford tossed in one power-play tally.

Freshman Matt Duarte started in goal for Drew and collected nine saves while playing the first half. Classmate Sawyer Kennedy stopped six shots over 25 minutes while Yoel Ovadya stopped one shot during the last five minutes.

The Rangers play their season finale next Saturday, when they visit Juniata College at 1 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair.
