Rangers Strike Early, Top Merchant Marine

MADISON, N.J. - Junior Kat Kugler scored two goals and the Drew University women's soccer team defeated United States Merchant Marine Academy 3-1 in a non-conference tilt Wednesday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (3-3) never trailed after scoring twice in the first half. In the 28th minute, senior defender Jessie Brannick delivered a long pass into the box, where it slipped behind the keeper and a hustling Kugler tapped it in for her second goal of the season.

Senior Rebecca Racine pushed Drew's lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute. Sophomore Kati Matteson lofted a ball from beyond midfield, giving Racine a 1-on-1 with the goalie. Racine raced in and maneuvered around the goalie, burying a shot into a wide-open net.

The Mariners (0-3) found the back of the net in the 39th minute, when Natalie Colpoys converted a penalty kick.

Kugler set the final score when she struck a second time, taking a short pass from junior Isabella Grof-Tisza and drilling in a shot from the left side of the box, good for her first career multi-goal game.

After outshooting the visitors 16-4 in the first half, the Rangers held an 8-2 shot advantage in the second period, when Ronnie Florek came on to make five saves.

Freshman Sarah Crowley made three saves in net for the Rangers while Margaret Ripperger stopped five shots in the opening half for USMMA.

Drew continues its schedule on Saturday, when it visits RPI at 2 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
