MADISON, N.J. - For the second year in a row, senior defender
Jessie Brannick scored the game-winning goal in the Drew University women's soccer team's Landmark Conference (LC) opener, vaulting the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over Juniata College at a rain-soaked, wind-swept Ranger Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Brannick also scored the game's only goal in Drew's conference opener last season when she struck in the 90th minute of a 1-0 victory at Goucher College.
Versus Juniata, Brannick's goal was set up by a long free kick by senior
Emma Shatel on the left side in the 76th minute. She lofted a sky-high pass into the box, where it was tapped out of midair and into the back of the net.
The Rangers (5-4, 1-0 LC) made the goal stand up and yielded just one shot that was not on frame the rest of the way.
For the game, Drew finished with advantages in shots (13-6) and corner kicks (9-1) while yielding just one shot on goal.
Cati Besch made six saves for the Eagles (4-3, 0-1 LC) while freshman
Sarah Crowley turned aside one shot while posting her first collegiate shutout for the Rangers.
Drew dominated possession in the opening half, when it outshot the Eagles 8-0. However, that's when Besch made four of her stops and it was a scoreless game at the intermission.
Juniata found an offensive spark early in the second half, reeling off their first four shots over an 11-minute stretch. The Eagles nearly took the lead in the 58th minute but that's when a long shot from Ashley McWilliams bounced off the right post.
The Rangers pick up their schedule on Wednesday, when they visit cross-town rival FDU-Florham at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
