Tyson Scores a Pair in Tie Versus FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – Senior Christian Tyson scored two quick goals early in the game, but FDU-Florham answered with a pair, including the game-tying goal in the 86th minute and the Drew University men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw versus its cross-town rival in the final match of the Drew Fall Festival in Ranger Stadium Sunday evening.

Tyson has now scored all three Drew goals through the team's first two matches after netting the team's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to SUNY New Paltz on the opening day of the tournament on Friday.

Junior Kevin Kiernan assisted on both goals for the Rangers (1-1).

Diego Trujillo scored of FDU's goals.

SUNY New Paltz defeated Saint Elizabeth 4-0 in the first game of the day to clinch the tournament title.

In the 10th minute, Kiernan controlled the ball at midfield and sent a pass upfield to Tyson on the left wing, who took one touch and blasted a shot past the keeper from the left wing. Just over a minute later, junior Thomas Zurkowski sent in a corner kick that was headed by Kiernan on the right post. His pass found Tyson, who delivered a rocket past the goalie to make it 2-0 with just over 11 minutes gone by in the match.

Tyson nearly recorded a hat trick later in the half, but an apparent header goal was called off due to an offside call.

The Devils (0-0-2) pulled even in the 31st minute, when a free kick from Trujillo deflected in off the left post. FDU would outshoot the Rangers 7-4 in the opening half, but Drew led 2-1 at the break.

Trujillo set the final score when he dribbled in from the left side and drilled a low shot that found its way into the far post.

Sophomore Brandon Jachera made three saves while playing the first in goal for the Rangers before classmate Pim van Hilten stopped a pair of shots in the second half while making his collegiate debut.

Drew returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
