Women’s Volleyball Downs Marywood in Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – Three different Rangers reached doubles figures in kills and the Drew University women's volleyball team celebrated its home opener with a 3-1 victory over Marywood University Thursday evening in Baldwin Gym.
 
Drew won by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-15.
 
The Rangers have now won their home opener in each of their first three years as a varsity program.
 
Sophomore Teeya Desgoutte led the way for the Blue and Green with 14 kills, 17 digs, and three blocks. Sophomore Marissa Guajardo added 12 kills, four blocks, and three aces while classmate Emily Shirk posted 11 kills and 15 digs. All three recorded their career-highs for kills.
 
Freshman Alyssa Rachwal contributed with 38 assists and 11 digs for her first career double-double. She also served up three aces while junior Genevieve Sarinelli scooped a career-high 15 digs.
 
Mikayla Meek led the Pacers (2-3) with 12 kills and 11 digs.
 
The Rangers came out strong and hit .275 in the opening set in which they committed just two hitting errors. Desgoutte and Guajardo each tallied four kills in the opening period, when they Rangers pulled away with a 9-3 run midway through the stanza.
 
In the second set, Guajardo threw down five kills while Shirk heated up with four of her kills. Drew led by as much as six (14-8) early in the set before the Pacers rallied to edge within two twice, the last coming at 24-22. However, the Rangers clinched the set on a block from Desgoutte and Guajardo.
 
Meek registered nine of her kills in the third set, when Marywood rallied from an early three-point deficit and closed the period on a 4-0 spurt. Desgoutte tallied five kills in the set while Shirk posted four terminations.
 
The Rangers settled any doubt in the final set, racing out to an 8-0 lead that eventually ballooned to a 17-4 bulge. Desgoutte led the Rangers with four kills in the period.
 
Drew returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to William Paterson University for a tri-match, taking on Merchant Marine at 1 p.m. and William Paterson at 3 p.m.
