Catholic Tops Women’s Volleyball in Landmark Opener

MADISON, N.J. – Junior Teeya Desgoutte and sophomore Alyssa Rachwal each posted a double-double, but the Drew University women's volleyball team was handed a 3-1 setback by Catholic University in its Landmark Conference opener Friday evening in Baldwin Gym.
 
The Cardinals (9-12, 2-1 LC) won by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 25-18.
 
Desgoutte totaled 12 kills and 13 digs while Rachwal notched 29 assists and 11 digs. Junior Inaya Stanford added seven kills for the Rangers while classmate Marissa Guajardo posted five blocks. Senior Genevieve Sarinelli totaled 21 digs.
 
Laci Freitas led the Cardinals with 10 kills.
 
In the opening set, the score was tied at 12-all before Catholic pushed ahead with a 4-0 surge. The Rangers rallied to pull to within 17-16 and trailed just 23-21 before the Cardinals scored the final two points on kills from Grace Guerin and Freitas.
 
Drew raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set before Catholic rallied to assume a 9-6 lead. The Cardinals still led at 12-11 before the Rangers pulled away with a key 6-0 outburst, which included three kills from Desgoutte.
 
Catholic nudge to within 19-15 before Drew ended the set on a 6-1 run.
 
The Cardinals never trailed in the final two sets, though it was close the entire way in the third. Catholic never led by more than three until it was 18-14, though the Rangers trimmed the gap to 21-19 before the visitors closed out the set on a 4-1 spurt.
 
Catholic took control midway through the final set, using an 8-2 run to open up a 15-8 lead. The visitors led by as much as eight, but the Rangers refused to quit and trailed just 21-17. However, that's when the Cardinals ended the match on a 4-1 surge.
 
The Rangers are right back in Baldwin Gym on Saturday for a tri-match. Drew opens the day by taking on Landmark Conference foe Goucher College at noon before facing non-conference opponent Marywood University at 4 p.m.
