Grof-Tisza Vaults Rangers to First Landmark Win

TOWSON, Md. – Senior Isabella Grof-Tisza scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team earned its first Landmark Conference victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Catholic University Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

With the victory, the Rangers (5-4-4, 1-1-2 LC) avenged last year's overtime loss to Catholic in the semifinals of the Landmark Conference Championships.

Competing in just her fifth match of the season, Grof-Tisza recorded her first goal of the year, her fourth career tally, and her second game-winner.

Sophomore Sarah Crowley made three saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

Ava Rieger turned aside six shots for Catholic (5-5-2, 1-2-1 LC).

Graduate student Rebecca Racine initiated the goal for the Rangers with a takeaway following a restart. Dribbling down the center of the field, she pushed the ball forward just as she was tackled by a defender. But her pass was on the mark to a racing Grof-Tisza, who made one touch inside the box and slotted a shot past an oncoming Rieger for an impressive goal for the Rangers.

Neither side recorded another shot the rest of the way.

In a defensive-minded first half, the Rangers held a slim 3-2 shot advantage. All three Drew shots were on frame, with all three coming off the foot of senior Alexa Krause.

The offense picked up for both teams in the second half, when Drew outshot the Cardinals 7-4. Fifth-year Maggie Speckhart, Racine, and junior Francesca Veltri all took shots on goal in the period while Racine and freshman Kristina Lowe both had a shot bounce off the post.

Crowley kept Catholic off the scoreboard by making all three of her stops over a nine-minute stretch early in the second half.

The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Wednesday, when they visit Moravian University at 7 p.m.
