EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Freshman
Vitalii Datsyk scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute and the Drew University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 Landmark Conference victory at Wilkes University Wednesday evening.
Senior
Thomas Zurkowski set up the go-ahead tally with a long pass beyond midfield. Datsyk hauled it in on the left side of the field before slotting a shot between a diving defender and the goalie and inside the far post for his second goal of the season and his first game-winner.
Junior
James Cahill also scored for the Rangers (7-4-2, 1-2 LC), who trailed 1-0 at the half.
Drew racked up a 21-9 shot advantage, but Matthew Conti made seven saves for the Colonels (3-10-1, 0-3 LC). Graduate student
David Hoyt turned aside three shots for the Rangers.
Xavier Guerreiro put Wilkes on top early when he converted a penalty kick in the sixth minute. Hoyt helped keep the Rangers to within a goal, making all three of his saves in the first half.
Drew outshot the Colonels 10-6 in the opening period, but that's when Conti recorded four of his stops.
Cahill pulled the Rangers even in the 59th minute, blasting in a high shot from the right side for his third goal of the season. Meanwhile, the Rangers used some lockdown defense to prevent Wilkes from taking a shot on goal in the second half, setting up Datsyk's game-winner.
Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it hosts Catholic University in another Landmark Conference tilt starting at 3:30 p.m.
