MADISON, N.J. – Fifteen different Rangers scored a point and the Drew University men's basketball team raced to a 115-65 victory over York (N.Y.) College in its home opener Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers (2-2) posted the fourth-highest point total in team history and broke their own Landmark Conference record for assists in a game (34), edging the former mark that was set versus Moravian on Jan. 12, 2022. They also the school record for assists in a game, equaling the standard that was established on Feb. 18, 1984 at Delaware Valley.
Five Rangers scored in double figures, and senior guard
Josh Kline led the way with 18 points to go with five rebounds.
James Anderson added 17 points on 5-of-9 3-point shooting while senior guard
Malcolm Newman, playing his first game in over two years, enjoyed a triumphant return with 14 points, four assists, and three steals.
Sophomore forward
Matthew Zenker added 13 points for Drew, which has now scored over 100 points in three of its first four games, while senior forward
Peso Crump netted 11 points. Senior guard
Pat Higgins dished out a career-high nine assists and was one of 12 different Rangers who were credited with at least one assist for the game.
Brandon Barrett led the Cardinals (0-3) with 14 points.
Drew took control fright from the start, outscoring York 11-2 to open the contest. The lead hit double figures (18-6) on a 3-pointer from Anderson with 15:20 left in the opening half, and mushroomed over 20 (33-12) on a lay-up from Newman with 9:14 on the clock. A 16-2 Ranger run gave the hosts a 32-point lead late in the half, and the Blue and Green led 57-28 at the break.
The Rangers led by at least 28 throughout the second half and continued to build on their lead the rest of the way, outscoring the Cardinals 36-17 to end the game.
Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it visits Moravian University in its Landmark Conference opener.
