Men’s Basketball Rallies Past Moravian in Landmark Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Drew University men's basketball team erased an 11-point second-half deficit and the Rangers pulled away late to topple Moravian University 82-75 in their Landmark Conference opener Wednesday evening.

Drew (3-2, 1-0 LC) trailed 67-56 with 12:16 remaining but came all the way to take the lead (72-71) on a 3-pointer from junior forward David Musial with 3:43 left.

The Greyhounds led 75-72 with 2:16 to go, but the Rangers ended the game on a 10-0 run. Drew canned all six of its free throw attempts down the stretch, including four straight from Musial that put his team up 80-75 with 21 seconds left.

Senior guards Josh Kline and Malcolm Newman posted 14 points apiece for the Rangers while Kline also dished out five assists. Musial finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore forward Matthew Zenker totaled 10 points and four boards. Sophomore guard Eli Yusavage contributed nine points and seven rebounds while junior forward Kevin Cronin netted eight points.

Chad Kratzer scored 20 points to lead Moravian (2-1, 0-1 LC).

It was a nip-and-tuck affair for most of the first half, but consecutive 3-pointers from Alex Dietz and Kratzer put Moravian up by seven with 1:48 remaining. However, the Rangers responded with a 3-ball from Yusavage and a dunk from Zenker to pull to within two, and Moravian led just 45-42 at the intermission.

Zenker knocked down a jumper to pull the Rangers within 57-53 with 15:07 left before the 'Hounds embarked on a 10-3 run to open up their 11-point advantage. It was still a nine-point game with 7:14 to go before Drew scored 10 unanswered point to reclaim the lead (72-71) on Musial's big 3.

Moravian answered with the next four points, but that was all the offense it would muster the rest of the way, as the Greyhounds turned it over on their next three possessions before missing two free throws and a pair of 3-pointers on their last three trips down the court.

Meanwhile, junior guard Devon Musial sparked the Rangers final comeback with a jumper before Kline put Drew in front to stay with a layup at the 1:41 mark that made it 76-75.

David Musial then hit his four clutch free throws before Kline blocked a 3-point attempt with 11 ticks showing and canned a pair of foul shots to set the final score.

The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when they host Goucher College at 4 p.m.
