Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Neumann in Season Opener

ASTON, Pa. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team outscored Neumann University 4-1 in the first quarter, but the host Knights responded with a 7-0 run and handed the Rangers a 10-8 setback in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Juniors Charlie Collins and Mike DeMayo posted two goals and one assist apiece for Drew, which outshot Neumann 47-36, while sophomore transfer Riley Zeer also scored a pair of goals. Senior GJ Nazziola finished 13-for-20 on faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls, and freshman Joe Barnish made 11 saves in his collegiate debut. Senior Jordan Wilson added six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Brendan Boschi posted five goals and two assists to pace the Knights while Owen Avelar made 22 saves.

After Boschi scored the game's opening goal, the Rangers reeled off four unanswered tallies, netting one apiece from senior Alex Higgins, Zeer, sophomore Ian Curley, and Collins to assume their three-goal lead. Neumann scored the only three goals in the second quarter to make it a 4-4 game at the intermission.

The Knights added the first three goals of the second half and led 7-4 with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Zeer stemmed the rally for Drew, striking with 1:21 on the clock to make it a 7-5 game heading into the final period.

DeMayo pulled the Rangers to within one when he scored just over a minute into the fourth quarter. But the Knights answered with a 3-0 run, with Boschi scoring his final two goals to cap the surge and push Neumann's lead to 10-6. Collins and DeMayo scored 37 second apart to bring the Rangers to within two with 5:04 left, but neither side managed a shot on goal the rest of the way.

Drew continues its season next Saturday, when it hosts Albright College at 1 p.m. in its home opener.
