Men’s Lacrosse Uses Quick Start, Strong Finish to Beat Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team outscored Lycoming College 7-2 to start the game, then netted the last four goals of the game to earn a 12-6 Landmark Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

Senior GJ Nazziola enjoyed a big day on faceoffs for Drew (7-7, 2-4 LC), finishing 17-for-21 while picking up 15 ground balls. Junior Charlie Collins posted three goals and two assists for the Rangers, who earned advantages in shots (43-30) and ground balls (36-25), while senior Brett Spafford also scored three goals.

Senior Tommy Larmore notched two goals and one assist for Drew while classmate Kellum Foster-Palmer contributed one goal and three assists. Freshman Joe Barnish collected seven saves, and senior Jordan Wilson picked up six ground balls.

Ben Franco recorded 18 saves for the Warriors (3-7, 1-5 LC).

The Rangers never trailed after opening on a 3-1 run. Tommy Larmore scored the game's first goal just over two minutes into the contest before Spafford went back-to-back midway through the period. Lycoming pulled to within 3-2, but that's when Drew answered with a 5-0 run. Tommy Larmore and sophomore Colin Diodato scored once each to close out the opening quarter and hand the Rangers a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Junior Joey Larmore extended Drew's advantage to 6-2 early in the second quarter, and neither team scored for exactly 10 minutes until Spafford found paydirt with 3:52 showing to put the Rangers up five. The Warriors netted the final goal of the half to make it a 7-3 game at the intermission.

Lycoming edged the Rangers 2-1 in the third quarter, then scored the first goal of the final period to nudge within 8-6 with 14:17 remaining. But that's when Drew buckled down defensively and blanked the Warriors the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Rangers iced the win by scoring the last four goals of the game, including two from Spafford.

The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Moravian University at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
