Racine’s Game-Winner Lifts Rangers Over FDU

MADISON, N.J. – Graduate student Rebecca Racine scored off a cross from senior Alexa Krause in the 75th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team captured the Battle of Madison Avenue, clipping FDU-Florham 1-0 in Ranger Stadium on a cool Tuesday evening.

The Rangers (3-3-2) topped their local rival for the second year in a row while posting their second shutout of the year and their first since their season opener.

Drew held a 16-9 shot advantage, but the Devils' Ava Gianni made eight saves.

Sophomore Sarah Crowley stopped five shots to earn her second clean sheet of the season and the eighth of her career for the Rangers.

Krause initiated the goal, stripping the ball on the right wing. She dribbled to the top of the box and centered a pass to Racine, who took one touch and slipped a shot past a sliding Gianni and into the lower-left corner of the net for her second goal of the season and the eighth game-winner of her career.

Racine nearly made two in a row in the 81st minute when she headed a pass toward the left post, but it was hauled in by Gianni.

Crowley sealed the win with a spectacular save in the 82nd minute, diving to the turf to stop a sharp header off a corner kick.

The Rangers had numerous opportunities to score in the first half but were unable to dent Gianni, who made a number of highlight-reel saves. She went airborne to knock away a rip from freshman Kristina Lowe in the 22nd minute, then made a leaping deflection on a looping shot from Krause, smacking the ball off the crossbar and over the end line. Gianni also knocked down a blast from Racine, who had an open look at the net in the 32nd minute.

Crowley made three stops in the first half, then collected one more save early in the second half before her late game saver.

The Rangers open Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when they visit Juniata College in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
