MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team won seven events but Catholic University handed the Rangers a 167-127 setback in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon in F.M. Kirby Pool.
Junior
Nicholas Heinio-Widell led the way for Drew, capturing three individual victories versus the defending conference champions. A national qualifier last season and a two-time Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Year, he touched first in the 50-freestyle (21.61), 100-butterfly (51.79), and the 200-IM (1:58.85).
Adding one individual win apiece were senior
Gabe Spivak in the 100-breaststroke (59.56), junior
Kyle Talerico in the 200-butterfly (1:55.75), and senior
Brendan Burkett in the 100-freestyle (47.60).
In addition, the Rangers opened the meet with a thrilling win in the 200 medley relay as sophomore
Thiago Silva, sophomore
Hunor Harsanyi, Heinio-Widell, and Burkett teamed up for a time of 1:36.03. Catholic took a two-second lead after the opening leg and still led by 0.74 seconds before Burkett closed the relay with a 20.81-second split, seizing the lead in the final stretch.
Freshman
Marcell Hudak added runner-up showings in both the 200-butterfly (1:56.58) and the 500-freestyle (4:57.13) as did junior
Liam Gregory in the 1,000-freestyle (10:18.50), Burkett in the 200-freestyle (1:47.50), senior
Ricky Kilichowski in the 200-backstroke (2:01.53), and Harsanyi in the 200-breaststroke (2:12.78).
The Rangers return to action on Oct. 24, when they travel to York (Pa.) College for a dual meet starting at 5 p.m.
