MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but Elizabethtown College held on for a 3-2 Landmark Conference victory over the Rangers on Senior Night in Baldwin Gym.
The Blue Jays won by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-7.
Prior to the start of the match, the Rangers recognized seniors
Marissa Guajardo,
Abigail Pereira,
Emily Shirk, and
Inaya Stanford in a brief ceremony.
Guajardo posted a big night, logging a season-high 14 kills while making just one error on 31 swings for a .419 hitting performance. She also scooped a career-high-tying 12 digs for her second career double-double.
Freshman
Coco Otto added a double-doubles of her own, posting season-highs of 16 kills and 16 digs. Stanford contributed a season-high 11 kills while sophomore
Lindsey Millis registered eight kills and 21 digs. Junior
Alyssa Rachwal handed out 28 assists, and sophomore
Aidyn Stone contributed 16 digs. Pereira pitched in with six kills.
Elizabethtown never trailed in the opening set, though it was close most of the way. The Blue Jays led just 13-10 before the Rangers broke it open with a 7-0 run.
The Rangers led in the early going in the second set and held an 8-5 advantage before Etown rallied with a 6-1 surge to take the lead for good. Drew stayed within striking distance, however, and trailed just 21-18 before the Blue Jays closed on a 4-1 run.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair most of the way, but with the scored tied at 12-all the Rangers used a 6-1 outburst to open up some breathing room. The Jays rallied late and tied it at 23-apiece, but Drew scored the last two points of the set, including a kill from Stanford that clinched it.
It was a nail-biter in the fourth set as well, but with the score tied 13-13, the Rangers ran off a key 5-0 surge. Pereira, Millis, and sophomore
Skyler Ribitzki all had a kill in the stretch before freshman
Cristina Coombs capped it with an ace. The Blue Jays drew to within two points at 24-22, but Millis finished off the set with a kill.
Drew started the deciding set leading 4-2, with Pereira and Stanford each throwing down an early kill, but Etown rallied with a 6-1 run to go ahead to stay. Another kill from Stanford made it 10-7, but the Blue Jays closed on a 5-0 run, capped by three straight aces from Claire Erdman.
The Rangers continue their schedule with a home tri-match on Saturday. Drew takes on Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference tilt at noon before facing Lancaster Bible College in a non-conference tilt at 4 p.m.
