Munoz, Men’s Soccer Top Juniata on Senior Day

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Matt Munoz scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute and the Drew University men's soccer team secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Juniata College in a Landmark Conference tilt on Senior Day in Ranger Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers (10-4-2, 4-3-1 LC) clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament and find themselves in fourth place in the conference standings heading into the final day of the season this coming Tuesday.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors Jared Brown, James Cahill, Chris Chyzowych, Ryan Fischer, and Jonathan Gutierrez, and Pim van Hilten were recognized in a brief ceremony.

Drew never trailed after jumping to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore Raymond McLeod Jr. Junior Ryan Dunne initiated the goal, bringing the ball downfield and ripping a shot from the left side. The ball was deflected by Juniata keeper Maxwell Matttioni, and McLeod followed up from the top of the box, firing in the rebound for his first career goal.

The Rangers outshot Juniata 6-0 in the first half and carried their 1-0 lead into the intermission. But the Eagles (7-4-7, 2-2-4 LC) found an offensive spark in the second half, when the two sides each attempted five shots. Juniata finally broke through in the 51st minute, when Jayden Gaynor scored on a deflected throw-in.

Drew won a 50-50 ball at midfield following a Juniata goal kick and converted it into the go-ahead tally. Cahill pushed a through ball down the left side of the field to junior Nick Venziale on the left post. Venziale turned and threaded a pass to an open Munoz, who from the top of the box blasted a one-timer past a diving Mattioni and into the right side of the net for his third goal of the season and his second game-winner.

Neither side managed a shot on goal the rest of the way.

The Rangers close out the regular season on Tuesday, when they host No. 16-ranked University of Scranton at 7 p.m.
