Late Goal Lifts No. 11 Scranton Versus Men’s Soccer

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team shut out University of Scranton for 78 minutes, but the No. 11-ranked and undefeated Royals scored a late goal to edge the Rangers 1-0 in the Landmark Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

Despite the loss, Drew (10-5-2, 4-4-1 LC) will continue its season in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament by virtue of finishing among the top-six teams in the conference standings. The Rangers earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will visit No. 4-seeded Goucher College in a first-round match on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Scranton (12-0-5, 7-0-2 LC), which earned the No. 1 seed in the conference championship, outshot the Rangers 13-7 while posting its 13th consecutive shutout. The Royals entered the game with the top-ranked defense in Division III, having allowed just one goal on the season.

Neither side scored in an extremely tight first half in which the Royals held a slim 5-4 edge in shots. The Rangers placed a pair of shots on goal in the period, including a long-range blast from junior Declan Marcilla Ryan that was hauled in by Scranton keeper Charlie Smith in the 27th minute. Just over a minute later, senior Chris Chyzowych blasted a low liner from the top of the box that required a diving stop from Smith for his second and final save of the night.

Junior Donovan Friedhoff made one save in the opening period and the two sides entered the intermission tied 0-0. Scranton turned up the pressure offensively in the second half, when the Rangers 9-2 in the second half, when Friedhoff stopped another shot in the 66th minute. But the Royals broke through when it struck on a scramble following a long throw-in that was deflected. Owen Potter scored on a close-range blast off a header from Drew Paxson.

The Rangers managed a shot from junior Kevin Martinez that led to a corner in the 84th minute and close-range rip from freshman Matt Munoz that missed just right as Scranton held off a late push from Drew.
