HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Drew University men's basketball team outscored Juniata College 49-30 in the second half and the Rangers earned an 87-66 Landmark Conference road victory Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (5-0, 2-0 LC) forced the Eagles into 15 second-half turnovers and converted them into 18 points. For the game, Drew scored 26 points off 22 Eagle miscues.
With the win, Drew has now won 23 straight Landmark Conference regular-season games and 22 consecutive games versus Landmark Conference opponents (including postseason games).
The Rangers used a balanced offensive attack versus Juniata, with junior guards
Andre De Los Reyes and
Charlie Thornton leading the way with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Drew's bench added a season-high 42 points, including 11 from sophomore guard
Marc Herasme and 10 from sophomore forward
Ben Manns, who also grabbed eight rebounds. Senior forward
David Musial led all players with nine rebounds.
Drew shot 84.0% (21-for-25) at the foul line and out-rebounded the Eagles 44-30.
Ty Kocak scored a game-high 19 points for Juniata (2-3, 0-2 LC) while Joe Bruce added 16 points.
It was a tight affair in the early going, but an old-fashioned 3-point play from junior guard
Taylor Perlmutter put the Rangers in front to stay at 30-28 with 4:13 left in the opening half. But the Eagles kept the deficit under five over the rest of the period and Drew carried a 38-36 edge into the locker room.
The Rangers came out hot in the second half, opening on a 7-0 spurt that included a 3-for-3 trip to the foul line for senior forward
Kevin Cronin and a 3-pointer from De Los Reyes. Juniata answered with the next four points to make it 45-40, but that's as close as it would get.
Drew used a 13-5 surge over a five-minute stretch to assume a 14-point lead (58-44) with 11:13 remaining, and the Eagles were unable to get closer than 11 the rest of the way. The Rangers settled any doubt with a 13-3 run that made it 81-60 with 4:04 showing.
The Blue and Green continue their season on Tuesday, when they travel to St. Joseph's-Long Island on Tuesday in a non-conference tilt starting at 5 p.m.
