PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Drew University men's basketball team pulled away midway through the second half and the 23rd-ranked Rangers ran their season-opening winning streak to six with an 86-74 non-conference victory at St. Joseph's-Long Island Tuesday evening.
Drew led by three with 9:02 remaining before a 10-0 run gave the Rangers a 72-59 cushion with 5:29 left. The Blue and Green led by at least nine the rest of the way.
The Rangers earned their first-ever victory over the Golden Eagles. The two sides were meeting for just the third time and the first time since the 2014-15 season.
Junior guard
Andre De Los Reyes scored a game-high 21 points for the Rangers while senior forward
David Musial posted a big all-around performance, recording 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Senior guard
Devon Musial added 13 points while junior guard
Charlie Thornton contributed eight points and seven rebounds.
TayShaun Hawkins scored 20 points for the Golden Eagles (0-5).
Drew was in control early, opening the game on a 12-0 run. The Rangers led by as much as 15 (32-17) with 8:34 left in the first half before the hosts climbed back into it with a 17-2 run, pulling even with 2:13 on the clock. However, Drew answered with a 10-2 run to close the stanza and led 44-36 at the intermission.
St. Joseph's opened the second half on a 9-0 to take its first lead of the night. The game went back and forth over the next several minutes, but the Rangers used an 8-0 run to go in front to stay.
Devon Musial hit a pair of free throws to tie it up before
David Musial scored back-to-back baskets, including a dunk that made it 58-54. De Los Reyes capped the run with a layup that put Drew on top 60-54.
The Golden Eagles edged back to within three before Drew's aforementioned 10-0 run. Devon and
David Musial started the run with back-to-back old-fashioned 3-point plays, and David converted another bucket as the Rangers' lead stretched back into double figures (70-59). Sophomore guard
Marc Herasme completed the run with a layup at the 5:29 mark. Herasme and De Los Reyes nailed 3-pointers on the next two possessions.
Devon Musial and De Los Reyes sealed it in the final minute, with each going 2-for-2 at the foul line.
The Rangers are off for Thanksgiving Break before returning to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, when they host Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
