Etown Rallies For OT Victory Over No. 20 Rangers

MADISON, N.J. – The 20th-ranked Drew University men's basketball team saw its undefeated start come to a close Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gymnasium as Elizabethtown College rallied for a 95-93 overtime win in a Landmark Conference nailbiter.

Senior guard Eli Yusavage and junior guard Andre De Los Reyes scored 21 points apiece for the Rangers (6-1, 2-1 LC), who had three lengthy winning streaks come to an end. Drew had won its previous 23 regular-season games versus Landmark Conference opponents and had captured its last 22 games overall (including postseason) versus Landmark foes. In addition, the Rangers had won their last 16 games inside Baldwin Gym.

Austin Finarelli led the Blue Jays (5-1, 2-1 LC) with 33 points, including a driving layup with 1.5 seconds left in regulation that sent the game to overtime and a pair of game-winning free throws with 4.4 ticks showing in OT. Zuri Harris added 26 points while shooting 7-of-9 from 3-point range for Elizabethtown, which overcame a 62-39 deficit with 15 minutes left in the second half.

Junior guards Charlie Thornton and Taylor Perlmutter contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Drew while senior forward David Musial posted eight points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.

The Blue Jays rallied to make it a one-possession game (74-71) with 4:10 left regulation, setting up a scintillating finish.

Drew twice pushed the lead back to six, first on a 3-pointer by Thornton with 3:50 remaining, then on a layup from Yusavage with 3:00 to go. Drew held a four-point lead (81-77) when Thornton found Yusavage cutting down the lane with 46 seconds remaining, but the Blue Jays scored the last four points of regulation, capped by Finarelli's bucket that tied it and sent the Rangers to their second overtime contest in their last four games.

The extra session proved to be incredibly close, as it featured four ties and three lead changes with neither side leading by more than three. Thornton knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Rangers up 84-81 early in the period, and a De Los Reyes triple made it 89-86 with 2:55 remaining. Elizabethtown tied it with consecutive baskets to take its first lead of the night at 90-89 on a Finarelli tip-in.

Musial hit 1-of-2 free throws with 1:53 showing to deadlock the score at 90-all, and after the Rangers got a defensive stop, Yusavage drained a triple from the right elbow to make it 93-90. But Harris answered with a 3 of his own at the other end to tie it once again, and Drew missed a 3-pointer on its ensuing possession. Woody Machado rebounded for the Blue Jays before Finarelli hit go-ahead free throws after drawing a foul driving down the lane.

The Rangers called timeout and advanced the ball into the frontcourt but were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

Drew opened the game hot, outscoring the Blue Jays 22-7 to start the game. The Rangers pushed their lead to 15 on two more occasions, the last coming at 27-12 midway through the half, but Etown rallied to tie it at 29-29 with 5:06 showing. But Drew ended the half on a run and carried a 44-36 lead into the locker room.

The Rangers outscored the Jays 18-3 to start the second half, setting up the visitors' comeback.

Drew resumes Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when it hosts Lycoming College at 2 p.m.
