Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rangers Stopped by Lancaster Bible at F&M Tourney Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. – Four different players scored in double figures, but Lancaster Bible College pulled away late to hand the Drew University men's basketball team an 88-80 setback in the first round of the Franklin & Marshall College Holiday Tournament Monday afternoon.

The Rangers (8-2) will now take on the loser of the other first-round game between Franklin & Marshall and the City College of New York in the tournament consolation game on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Sophomore guard Marc Herasme scored a career-high 20 points off the bench for the Rangers, who were playing for the first time since their 85-71 victory at Merchant Marine on Dec. 16.  Herasme shot 5-for-7 from 3-point range, and he also grabbed a career-best six rebounds.

Junior guard Charlie Thornton added 15 points and six boards for Drew, which had three players foul out. Sophomore forward Ben Manns contributed 13 points and six rebounds while junior guard Eli Yusavage also tossed in 13 points. Senior forward David Musial notched seven points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

Camden Hurst netted 23 points for Lancaster Bible (8-2), which overcame 27-for-47 shooting at the foul line.

The Chargers opened the game on a 15-5 run, but the Rangers answered right back with a 9-0 spurt of their own. Yusavage kicked off the surge with a layup, and Manns capped it with four straight points to make it 15-14 with 12:08 on the clock.

Lancaster Bible nudged its lead back to five (21-16) with 10:24 left in the half, but that's when the Rangers embarked on a 21-7 outburst over the next six minutes. Freshman guard Erik Porch tied it with a pair of free throws at the 7:11 mark before a layup from Thornton gave Drew its first lead (25-23) since it was 5-4.

Thornton also knocked down a pair of 3-pointers during the run, and his second triple during the stretch capped the spurt and gave the Rangers their largest lead (37-28) up to that point with 4:44 left. He also drew a charge during the stretch, and with 3:01 to go his offensive rebound and kick-out to Herasme led to a 3-pointer that made it 40-31.

The Chargers came back with a 9-0 run to tie it before Manns connected on a pair of free throws with 38 ticks showing to give Drew a 42-40 halftime advantage.

It was a nip-and-tuck affair over the opening 10 minutes of the second half, which featured five ties and three lead changes. A 3-pointer from Herasme tied the game at 59-all with 10:01 to go, and the Rangers trailed just 67-66 after a put-back from Thornton with 6:09 showing. But the Chargers used a 10-2 run to go up 77-68 with 3:38 left before eventually pushing their advantage to 81-70 with 2:41 showing, marking the team's largest lead of the day.

The Rangers refused to go quietly, however, and Yusavage hit a pair at the line before Herasme drained back-to-back 3's to make it 83-78 with 44 seconds left. But Lancaster Bible sealed the win by making its final four free throws.
