BALTIMORE – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team opened the Landmark Conference Championships in impressive fashion on Thursday at Loyola University's Mangione Aquatic Center, winning each of the first two events to assume an early lead in the team standings.
With a pair of relay victories, the Rangers have racked up a quick 80 points and lead Scranton (66), Elizabethtown (60), Susquehanna (60), Wilkes (54), Juniata (50), Goucher (46), Catholic (34), and Lycoming (22).
The Rangers opened the meet with a record-setting performance in the 200-medley relay, as senior
Yan Zheng Lew, freshman
Thiago Silva, sophomore
Nicholas Heinio-Widell, and junior
Brendan Burkett broke Drew, Landmark Conference, and Landmark Conference Championship meet records with a time of 1:30.90 – over three second faster than runner-up Scranton.
In a much tighter race, the 800-freestyle relay team of sophomore
Kyle Talerico, sophomore
Liam Gregory, Lew, and Burkett teamed up for a winning time of 6:54.91. The Rangers led Catholic by over a second through the first two legs, only to see the Cardinals rally to take the slightest of leads heading into the anchor leg. However, Burkett seized an early lead and never looked back, as the Rangers defeated Catholic by exactly one second.
Day Two of the four-day meet will take place on Friday, with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
