Fast Start Lifts Montclair State in Leanos Cup Final

MADISON, N.J. – Montclair State University raced out to a big lead in the first quarter and the Red Hawks claimed the team title at Drew University's Leanos Cup with a 17-9 win over the Drew University men's lacrosse team Sunday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The tournament is named after former Drew Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Tom Leanos, the team's all-time winningest coach who compiled 234 victories in a career that spanned four decades from 1988-2017. Coach Leanos passed away this past February.

In the first game of the day, Immaculata defeated Manhattanville 12-8 in the tournament championship game.

Senior Mike DeMayo paced the Rangers (4-3) with three goals and two assists while senior Luke Bruther and junior Riley Zeer scored two goals apiece. Freshman Jake Rainero won 17-of-27 faceoffs while picking up 11 ground balls, and junior Sawyer Kennedy made 11 saves.

Jack Cleary paced Montclair State (6-1) with five goals and four assists.

The Red Hawks opened the game on a 6-0 run and led 8-1 at the end of the first quarter. The rest of the game was nearly a draw, however, and the two sides played to a 2-2 tie in the second quarter, when DeMayo scored both goals for the Rangers.

Both teams netted three goals in the third quarter, when Bruther struck twice for Drew, before Montclair posted a slight 4-3 advantage in the final period.

The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they host Susquehanna University at 1 p.m. in their Landmark Conference opener.
