Late Run Vaults Men’s Volleyball Over King’s

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's volleyball used a furious finish to earn a 3-1 victory over King's College in a non-conference tilt Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers, who won by scores of 25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24, trailed 23-19 in the fourth set before rallying with a 7-1 run to end the match.

Senior Ephraim Smith totaled 11 kills, including the match-clinching tally, and seven digs for Drew, which posted its first-ever win in four tries versus the Monarchs. Freshman Gio Martin added eight kills and 12 digs while classmate Matthew Adegbite also tallied eight kills. Junior Andrew DuHaime contributed 26 kills and five blocks, and freshman Eric Forget contributed 10 digs.

Logan Dougherty posted 15 kills and 11 digs for King's (11-9) while Greg Bousquet notched 12 kills and 11 digs.

In the opening set, Drew used an 8-2 run to open up a 14-8 lead and never looked back, leading by at least five the rest of the way. The Rangers led 10-7 early in the second set, but the Monarchs rallied with a 6-1 run to assume a 17-14. Drew scored the next two points before King's ended the set on an 8-2 push.

King's led 10-8 early in the third set, but freshman Michael Shipman provided the Rangers with a park off the bench. Shortly after entering the game, he had a hand in five out of six Drew points, throwing down three consecutive assist blocks before serving up back-to-back aces to put his team up 15-12. The Monarchs scored the next point before Drew responded with a 6-1 surge to build an insurmountable 21-14 lead.

The visitors led for much of the early part of the fourth set, and held a 17-11 lead before the Rangers rallied with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to one. Freshman Quinn Donahue came off the bench to post back-to-back kills for Drew. King's answered with a 6-3 to assume their 23-19 lead.

Drew won the next three points on three King's attack errors before Martin threw down a kill to pull the Rangers even at 23-all. The Monarchs scored the next point and were serving for set point, but Drew scored the last three points. King's committed another attack error along with a ball-handling error, setting up Smith's big swing.

The Rangers continue their season on Tuesday, when they visit Bard College at 7 p.m.
