SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton scored the first eight goals of the game and the host Royals handed the Drew University men's lacrosse team a 12-4 setback in Landmark Conference play Wednesday evening.
Sophomore
Jake Rainero turned in another strong performance on faceoffs for Drew (6-6, 2-3 LC), winning 14 of his 19 attempts while picking up 12 ground balls. Four different Rangers scored a goal while sophomore
Joe Barnish made 11 saves.
Scranton (6-8, 6-0 LC), the Landmark Coference co-leader, received five goals and an assist from Myle McCutcheon and 14 saves from Carsen Kirchner.
The Royals led 8-0 before senior
Mike DeMayo scored off an assist from freshman
Vincent Rubio. But Scranton scored the final goal of the half to go up 9-1 heading into the intermission.
The hosts netted the first two goals of the third quarter before senior
Luke Bruther buried a shot off a feed from freshman
Nick Carabetta to make it 11-2 with 6:21 on the clock. But Scranton scored just over a minute later and led 12-2 after three quarters of play.
Drew posted the only goals in the fourth quarter, as junior
Riley Zeer converted a dish from Nick Carabetta with 7:14 remaining before senior
Matt Giordano struck off pass from classmate
Tommy Larmore with 2:23 to go.
The Rangers pick up their schedule on Saturday, when they host Lycoming College at 1 p.m. on Senior Day in another Landmark Conference affair.
