MADISON, N.J. – Hobart College scored in the 50th minute and the Statesmen defeated the Rangers 1-0 in the championship match of the Drew/FDU Fall Festival Sunday afternoon at FDU's Robert T. Shields Field.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's soccer, the Statesmen (2-0) outshot the Rangers 13-9, but junior
Donovan Friedhoff made five saves for the Rangers (1-1).
Hobart held a 7-1 shot advantage in the first half, but that's when Friedhoff made four of his stops.
The Statesmen broke through early in the second half, when a long ball from the goalie was flicked ahead near midfield to a streaking Brady Leitner down the right sideline. Leitner tracked the ball down on the right side of the box and slotted a shot inside the far post for what held up as the game-winner.
The Rangers refused to go quietly, however, and outshot Hobart 8-6 in the second half. One of the team's best looks came in the closing minutes, when a low rip from junior
Ryan Dunne appeared to be headed for the right corner of the net before a defender cleared it away.
Drew picks up its schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
