TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer scored on a penalty kick in the fourth minute, and it held up as the game-winning goal as the host Engineers nipped the Drew University women's soccer team 1-0 on Saturday in a non-conference tilt.
The Rangers held a 9-8 edge in shots, but Audrey Montero made five saves for RPI (4-2).
Sophomore
Dani Iannelli turned aside three shots for Drew (2-2-1).
After Maddy Kaminski netted the crucial PK for RPI, the Rangers outshot the Engineers 5-1 over the remainder of the half. Freshman
Riley Bent, freshman
Gretchen Higgins, and sophomore
Megan Fedish all placed a shot on goal in the period for Drew.
The Engineers outshot the Rangers 6-4 in the second half, but that's when Iannelli stopped a pair of shots to keep it a one-goal game. Bent recorded both of Drew's shots on goal in the second half, including one in the 89th minute.
Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts Ramapo College at 7 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
