MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team posted its first shutout of the season, playing to a scoreless tie with New York University Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
It was the second year in a row that the two sides settled for a draw, as last season's meeting resulted in a 1-1 tie.
Junior
Donovan Friedhoff made three saves en route to his first career shutout for the Rangers (4-1-1), who outshot NYU 16-13. Jackson McCloskey turned aside four shots for the Violets (1-3-1).
In the first half, NYU outshot the Rangers 6-5, when Friedhoff stopped one shot and McCloskey recorded two saves.
Drew turned up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Violets 11-7, but each keeper posted two saves in the period.
Friedhoff recorded his top stop of the day in the 55th minute, when he hauled in a close-range blast on the left post.
The Rangers nearly went ahead with would have been a spectacular goal in the 65th minute, when senior
Ryan Fischer back-heeled a corner kick that required a leaping save from McCloskey. Then in the 88th minute, a header from sophomore
Konstantinos Papanikolas on a long throw-in from Fischer sailed just high.
Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts DeSales University at 7 p.m. in another non-conference affair.
