MADISON, N.J. – Goucher College scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute and the Gophers slipped past the Drew University men's soccer team 2-1 in the Rangers' Landmark Conference opener on Saturday at Ranger Stadium.
Drew (5-2-1, 0-1 LC) held a 22-8 shot advantage, but Ale Sternini made seven saves for the Gophers (3-2-3, 1-0 LC). Junior
Donovan Friedhoff stopped four shots for the Rangers.
Goucher jumped to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on a goal from Andres Aristimuno, and it held up as the only tally in the opening half. Drew outshot Goucher 9-2 in the period, when Sternini turned aside four shots.
The Rangers pulled even on a corner kick in the 50th minute, when junior
David Knox converted a pass from classmate
Andrew Dunne for his first collegiate goal. But later in the half, Drew Gentile sent home the game-winner for Goucher.
Less than a minute later, senior
James Cahill placed a shot on goal that was saved by Sternini. In the 85th minute, junior
Ignacio Martinez had a good look at the goal in front following a nifty pass from classmate
Owen Edwards, but his shot sailed just left.
The Rangers continue their schedule on Wednesday, when they host Immaculata College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference outing.
