Big Second Half Vaults Women’s Soccer Over Farmingdale

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Farmingdale State College 3-1 on the opening day of the Drew Fall Festival and the squad's home opener on Saturday at a sweltering Ranger Stadium.

Freshman Olivia Klein scored two goals 2:48 apart, including the go-ahead tally in the 58th minute for the Rangers (2-0-1), who outshot the Rams 19-7.

Sophomore Megan Fedish added her first collegiate goal for Drew while a pair of goalies split the time in net. Sophomore Dani Iannelli played the opening half and made two saves before junior Leael Avni blanked the Rams while turning aside one shot in the second period.

Sam Richards recorded eight saves for Farmingdale (2-2).

In the second game of the day, Stockton University defeated Ithaca College 1-0 in a game that was interrupted by two hours with a lightning delay.

Farmingdale's Paulina Fontara scored in the 30th minute to put the visitors up 1-0 in a defensive-minded opening half in which each side managed just three shots.

Klein pulled the Rangers even in the 55th minute. Stepping in front of a pass in the attacking zone, she split a pair of defenders before drilling a shot inside the right post for her second goal of the season.

Just minutes later, Klein was knocked down just outside the box on the left side of the field following a throw-in. But she hustled back to her feet and beat two defenders to the ball before slotting a shot inside the far post.

The Rangers closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute, when Fedish headed in a goal on a cross from sophomore Megan Jozak.

The Festival concludes on Sunday, when Drew takes on Ithaca at noon before Farmingdale faces Stockton at 2:30 p.m.
