MADISON, N.J. – Ithaca College scored in the 50th minute and the Drew University women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by on the second day of the Drew Fall Festival Sunday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's soccer, the Bombers held a slight 7-5 shot advantage. Both sides were limited to three shots on goal.
A pair of goalies split the time between the pipes for the Rangers (2-1-1), who were dealt their first loss of the season. Junior
Sarah Crowley started and blanked the Bombers in the opening half before sophomore
Dani Iannelli played the second half, making two saves.
Katrina Varnum collected three saves for Ithaca (3-1), which reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships last season.
In the second and final match of the Festival, Farmingdale State College and Stockton University tied 1-1.
The Rangers outshot Ithaca 3-1 in the first half, with all three of their shots finding the frame. Drew nearly went in front in the 35th minute, when, on a corner kick, freshman
Gretchen Higgins sent in a header that was hauled in by a diving Varnum.
In the second half, the Bombers broke through Ava Detorie delivered a pass from midfield that was deflected by a defender but found its way to Ella Shorkey, who lobbed a shot over the keeper for what held up as the game-winner.
The Rangers threatened again in the 74th minute, when sophomore
Sophia Lara accepted a cross and, from the center of the box, drilled a shot that just sailed wide right of the cage.
Drew continues its season next Saturday, when it visits Rensselaer Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
