Men’s Volleyball Earns Sweep at Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Drew University men's volleyball team earned its first sweep of the year with a 3-0 non-conference victory at Cairn University Wednesday evening.

The Rangers (2-1) won by scores of 25-15, 25-17, and 25-23.

Sophomore Matthew Adegbite threw down 11 kills and made just two errors on 15 swings for a .600 hitting night for Drew, which hit .289 on the evening. Sophomore Michael Shipman added seven kills and four blocks while classmate Quinn Donahue contributed 28 assists and six blocks. Sophomore Nathaniel Fisbeck added five kills in one set played while freshman James Kovac led the Rangers with five digs. Senior Barend Oostdam chipped in with four blocks.

Drew trailed just once the entire night, when it was 2-1 in the second set.

Drew took control of the opening set with a 9-1 run that made 18-9. The Rangers also pulled away midway through the second set, using an 8-3 run that gave them a 20-13 advantage. After the Highlanders cut the deficit to four (21-17), Drew ended on a 4-0 surge, starting with kills from Adegbite and Shipman.

The Rangers opened the final set on a 6-1 run, but Cairn quickly got back into it with a 5-1 spurt that cut the lead to one. The hosts managed to tie the score at 10-10, but they followed with a service error and Drew held a lead the rest of the way.

The visitors pushed their advantage to 17-12 following a 4-0 spurt that was sparked by kills from Fisbeck and freshman Lucas Mondin. Cairn rallied, however, and pulled to within one on five occasions. However, Fisbeck threw down kills that made it 21-19 and 22-20 before a termination from Shipman made it 24-22. Cairn answered with a kill before Drew won the match on a service error.

The Rangers continue their season on Friday and Saturday at the Misericordia Invitational. Drew takes on Elmira College on Friday at 5 p.m. before facing No. 11-ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. and Misericordia at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
