Men’s Lacrosse Stopped by Merchant Marine in Home Opener

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team lost by a final of 22-7 to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in its home opener Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

Sophomores Joseph Carabetta and Nick Carabetta scored two goals apiece for the Rangers (1-1) while senior Riley Zeer contributed one goal and two assists. Graduate student Joost van der Horst dished out two assists for Drew while senior Theo Krueger picked up five ground balls.

Owen Behr (four goals, three assists) and Owen Barcus (four goals, two assists) paced the Mariners (2-0), last year's Skyline Conference runner-up.

After Merchant Marine scored the game's opening goal, the Rangers came back with three unanswered tallies from Nick Carabetta, senior Colin Diodato, and Joseph Carabetta to assume a 3-1 lead with 10:43 left in the first quarter. But that's when the Mariners went on a lengthy scoring run, and the visitors led 5-3 at the end of the first quarter and 12-3 at halftime.

Joseph Carabetta struck again with the first goal of the third quarter while freshman Kullen Mcdermott, Zeer, and Nick Carabetta also scored in the second half.

Junior Joe Barnish started in goal and made 10 saves over 42 minutes.

The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Gwynedd Mercy University at 4 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
